1. Overview
PETROAN respects your right to control your personal data. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA), you have the right to request the erasure of your personal data held by us. This policy describes the account deletion process, the timeline for processing your request, and the limited circumstances in which some data must be retained.
Account deletion is the permanent removal of your PETROAN app account and associated personal data from our active systems. This action is irreversible once finalized.
2. Eligibility
You may request account deletion if:
- You are the registered account holder.
- You no longer wish to use the PETROAN App.
- You wish to exercise your right to erasure under the NDPA.
You are not immediately eligible for deletion if:
- You have an open, unresolved insurance claim that has not been settled or formally closed.
- You have a pending wallet transaction (deposit, withdrawal, or payment) that has not been finalized.
- Your account is subject to an active fraud investigation or regulatory inquiry.
In these cases, deletion will be deferred until the relevant matter is resolved. We will notify you of the deferral and the expected timeline.
3. How to Request Account Deletion
You can submit a deletion request through any of the following channels:
In-App (Recommended)
Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account in the PETROAN app. Follow the on-screen confirmation steps. This is the fastest method.
By Email
Send an email to privacy@petroan.ng with the subject line "Account Deletion Request". Include your registered email address and PETROAN membership number.
By Support Portal
Contact our support team at support@petroan.ng or call +234 800 000 0000. A support agent will guide you through the deletion request process.
For email and support-portal requests, we will verify your identity before processing the deletion to prevent fraudulent requests.
4. What Happens After You Submit
- Acknowledgement: We will confirm receipt of your request within 5 business days.
- Eligibility check: We will review your account for any open claims, pending transactions, or legal holds.
- Grace period: A 14-day cooldown period begins. During this period you may log in to cancel the deletion request if you change your mind.
- Deletion executed: If no cancellation is received, your account and personal data will be deleted from our active systems within 30 days of the original request.
- Confirmation: You will receive an email confirming that deletion has been completed.
5. Data That Will Be Deleted
Upon completion of the deletion request, the following data will be permanently removed from our active systems:
- Your account credentials (email, password hash, phone number).
- Personal profile information (name, date of birth, address).
- Device identifiers and push notification tokens.
- App usage analytics and session logs tied to your account.
- Location history stored in connection with your account.
- In-app support conversation history.
6. Data We Must Retain
Certain data cannot be deleted immediately due to mandatory legal retention obligations under Nigerian law, including the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020, Insurance Act, and CBN regulations. The following categories of data will be retained for the legally mandated periods after account deletion:
| Data Category | Retention Period | Legal Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance policy records & certificates | 7 years from policy expiry | Insurance Act / NAICOM regulations |
| Claims records & settlement documents | 7 years from claim closure | Insurance Act / NAICOM regulations |
| Financial transaction records | 7 years | CBN cashless policy / FIRS |
| KYC / identity verification data | 5 years | Money Laundering (Prevention) Act |
| Audit logs (for security investigations) | 2 years | NDPA / cybersecurity guidelines |
Retained data is stored in an isolated, restricted archive. It is not used for any marketing, profiling, or active processing purposes. Access is limited to audit and legal compliance teams only.
7. Active Insurance Policies & Claims
Deleting your account does not automatically cancel any active insurance policies. Policies remain in effect until their natural expiry date and are governed by the terms of the policy document issued by NICON Insurance Ltd. If you wish to cancel an active policy, you must do so separately through the insurer or your PETROAN branch representative before requesting account deletion.
Any open claims at the time of deletion will be frozen pending resolution. PETROAN will contact your registered phone number or next-of-kin/beneficiary to continue processing any outstanding claims even after account deletion.
8. Wallet Balance & Funds
If your PETROAN wallet holds a positive balance at the time of deletion, you must withdraw or transfer those funds before the deletion is finalized. We will notify you of any remaining balance during the 14-day cooldown period. Funds that are not withdrawn before finalization will be processed as follows:
- We will attempt to reverse the funds to your registered bank account.
- If reversal fails, unclaimed funds will be held for 90 days and released to you upon verified request.
- After 90 days of non-contact, unclaimed funds will be handled in accordance with the CBN unclaimed funds policy.
9. Reactivating Your Account
Account deletion is permanent. Once finalized, your account cannot be restored and all personal data removed from active systems cannot be recovered. If you wish to use the PETROAN App again in the future, you will need to create a new account and re-register your information and insurance products.
During the 14-day cooldown period, you may cancel the deletion by logging into the app and selecting Cancel Deletion Request in Settings, or by contacting our support team.
